Goblins
in Society
The time between the initial incursion and today reads as a bizarre fever dream, by historical standards. And that puts it mildly. The goblins struggled to find a place in our world and even today they are quite rare to find. For a time, it seemed that they would be unsuccessful in the modern economy. But a kind woman, Miss Price, offered them a room and board in her home. Over the years, Miss Price’s Home for Wayward Goblins would see hundreds of goblins through its doors. And it was said there isn’t a goblin on Earth who didn’t once spend time there. While it closed in the late 1990s, the legacy of Miss Price and her home stands out as a key step in acclimatizing goblins to our world.
A significant step for goblins on Earth is hotly debated. Some believe it never happened and some wish to forget the embarrassment. The Winter Global Games in 1989, hosted by the city of Calgary, was the first, and only, major sporting event to allow the Goblins to compete.
On the whole, the goblins did poorly. It was not for a lack of trying or for a physical limitation. It seems, that despite qualifying for several events, the goblins didn’t understand any of the rules. Though entertaining to watch, the goblins achieved no medals.
Sometime after the events of the Winter Games of ‘89 the Goblins suddenly and mysteriously seemed to disappear. For many, this disappearance is proof that Goblin History is a farce. They suggest, that to truly disappear one must conclude they never existed. Such a complete and sudden move from public to private is all but impossible. And the notable events at the Olympics and the existence of Miss Price’s Home for Wayward Goblins are the half-remembered farces of the past.
But partial evidence of their existence is enough to explore recent history for events that seem possibly Goblin-related. To that end, I discovered two events in the last three decades that bear investigation.
The first, in the 90s, the one-hit wonders The Gorks are worth exploring.
Their single “Incursion of the Heart” rose to nearly make the top 100 Billboard Hits. And fell shy following their appearance on late-night television. According to the Celebrity Times: “One of the strangest appearances by a musical group in late night television. The band forgot to bring instruments and so attempted to recreate the album’s song by disassembling the set and building new instruments while recording the episode. The resulting fire and lawsuit led to the end of The Gork’s career and the episode never aired.”
The second event seemingly tied to goblins was the pilot for a tv show called: Goblins. The show was pitched as an intimate look into the lives of real goblins and their day to day struggles. It centred on four goblins living their lives and talking about the mundane aspects of what it meant to be a hip goblin in the year 2010. The show wasn’t picked up. The network had planned to produce the show in the vein of docuseries comedies but the creators were selling it as reality tv. Neither would budge and this dispute led to a falling out and the show was canned.
With limited evidence of their historical roots, largely secondhand sources, and their now well-spread-out population, there is much debate about the existence of Goblins within the scholarly community.
That said, when they are found, Goblins are wondrous to behold. Your experience may vary but it is often grand, surprising and joyful.
To aid in the understanding of modern Goblins, I have taken it upon myself to discover, and introduce, several Goblins in common Goblin professions.
